Beltway Poetry Quarterly editor Kim Roberts sends in a FotHB Report from the DC Short Shorts Film Festival.
The competition weekend was packed—with screenings of great films, packed parties, and lots of opportunities to interact with visiting filmmakers from around the world. DC Shorts, now in its third year, is one of the fastest growing film festivals in the nation, featuring films 30 minutes or less.
It’s still not too late to see the final few screenings. The “Best of the Fest” screenings run through tonight (at 1:00, 4:00, 7:00, and 10:00), and Thursday, Sept. 21 will feature four LunaFest Screenings (same times) at the Landmark E Street Cinema, 555 11th St. NW, Metro Center.
“Best of the Fest” screenings feature 9 short films that won top awards in this year’s festival, including: “Victoria” by Max Carlini, a lush, gorgeous montage about family loss that won the First-Time Filmmaker’s Award; “Bone Mixers” by Mike DeChant and Doug Gritzmacher, a documentary about a multi-ethnic, multi-generational group in Silver Spring united by a passion for dominoes, which won the Best Local Filmmaker Award; and “Artistic License” by Michael Wohl, a comedy about a government functionary at the Department of Motor Vehicles who takes his job very, very seriously, which won the Filmmaker’s Choice Award from his peers.
“LunaFest” screenings feature 9 short films by and about women. This selection, now touring the nation, was juried by some of the industry’s top players, and includes films exploring immigration, body image, mothers, and girlhood. All proceeds from ticket sales to LunaFest will be donated in their entirety to The Breast Cancer Fund and The Mautner Project, two non-profit groups dedicated to improving women’s health.
A special wine and cheese reception will take place in the theater on Thursday between the two evening shows, at 9:00 pm. All LunaFest ticket holders are invited to attend.
Screenings are $12 and tickets may be purchased at the box office or from the DC Shorts web site. Don't miss it!
